One of our most awaited stops on our Portugal roadtrip was Obidos. Located 85km north of Lisbon, Obidos is the perfect stop-over on your way to Coimbra. It is one of the most well-preserved and charming medieval towns in Portugal perched on a hilltop flanked by a fortified castle wall. Marvel at the little white houses filled with bougainvillea, cobblestoned streets and gothic passageways while you make your way around Obidos. Be sure to treat yourself to the local smashing cherry liqueur (Ginja) which is served in tiny chocolate cups. Divine!
It is most easily reached by car which you can park outside the city walls for free or park for about 1€/hour inside the town. If you are planning only a short stopover, this is what we would recommend. From here on you can explore Obidos on foot. All in all it may take you about an hour, or a little more if you decide to stay for lunch or coffee. We recommend that you come either early in the morning or late in the evening in order to escape the tourist crowds. We hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we did!
Our final verdict: Obidos is best enjoyed in 1-2 hours!
