Finland, Finland, Finland; the country where I want to be. Such sings Monty Python and never have I agreed more with this sentiment than now, half a year after leaving Finland. Never have I missed the pristine Finnish forests and the untouched wilderness as much as after moving into the hustle and bustle of Copenhagen. Yes, I truly miss Finland.
And that’s why I am more than happy that now I have the chance to receive a taste of my former home right at my doorstep in Denmark. Finnflavours is an online retailer with a clear focus on authentic, organic, and sustainably sourced products from the Finnish wilderness. Not only is it a family business, it is also run by our very dear friends Elina and Tim.
Finnflavours – A Love Story
The story of Finnflavours is all too similar to ours: Founders Tim and Elina met in 2011 when Tim had moved to Finland for an exchange year under the Erasmus program. Time took its course and Tim finally settled in Finland permanently. After living in Tampere for a few years, Tim and Elina now call the former Finnish capital of Turku their home.
While Mihir and I were slowly beginning to doubt the certainty of our future in Finland, Tim’s affection for the country only seemed to grow more and more each day. It is only fitting that the Finnish Elina and Finland’s biggest fan, Tim, should start a business promoting Finnish values and delicacies abroad.
Authentic, Sustainable, Healthy
Apart from its unique story and lovable founders, what sets Finnflavours apart from other retailers, are its values; authenticity, health, and sustainability. From lush green forests to barren fells, Finnish nature provides a unique growing environment for plants. Finnish food is as pure as its nature. In fact, most of the berries consumed in Finland are still grown wild and hand-picked from bogs and forests during the summer months.
Many products on offer at Finnflavours are sourced from this pristine Finnish wilderness. Crops which cannot thrive in the sub-arctic climate of Finland, such as cacao, tea, or coffee, are certified organic. Apart from doing good for the environment, you’re also doing good for yourself. If one of your resolutions for 2018 is to lead a healthier lifestyle, Finnflavours is the right address. Their products are free of refined sugar and unnecessary additives. Elina also emphasizes that most products are gluten-free and vegan-friendly.
To engage socially is a particular matter of concern for Tim and Elina. Their suppliers are fellow small- and family enterprises, rooted in Finland. They hope to support entrepreneurs passionate about their products, over promoting large and impersonal companies.
Back to Basics
The values of Finnflavours extend far beyond the business, into Tim and Elina’s personal lives. For them, a sustainable and healthy lifestyle is the key to happiness. In the summer they love to explore the Finnish wilderness themselves and collect berries, mushrooms, and other wild foods. However, they are not alone.
Finns have always had an intimate relationship with nature and to this day the “Everyman’s Right” (jokamiehenoikeus) allows Finns to roam and live off the land freely. In the summer you will find the cities deserted. Instead, Finns venture into the wilderness and escape civilization for as long as the weather will allow. Indeed, you will be hard-pressed to find a people more respectful of nature and silence.
The range of products at Finnflavours is small but steadily growing. This is due to the diligent process Elina and Tim go through in order to find the highest quality products. Currently on offer are tea, energy bars and shots, berry powders, chocolate, a variation of spelt products, and most importantly coffee. No other people consume more coffee per capita than the Finns, at 12 kg of coffee per year.
For Elina and Tim, however, it is all about quality, not quantity. Their locally roasted coffee beans convey a sense of luxury and will fill your home with the most wonderful smell. But why stop there? These products are too good to enjoy alone. Share them with your family and friends. After all, they make a perfect gift for those who want to live healthily, and those who already have everything else 😉
The online shop is open 24/7 and offers free deliveries on all orders over 70€. You may pay for your delicious treats either through Klarna (credit card & invoice) or through PayPal. Customer satisfaction is important to Tim and Elina, which is why returns are always free. Delivery is executed swiftly and efficiently by DHL.
Put a Little Finnflavour in Your Life
Didn’t we promise you earlier that you’d get the chance to try some of the fantastic products yourself? Finnflavours were so kind to provide us with a sample package of their products, and you can win the very same! Curious what’s in it? Let’s take a look!
First up, Bear Hug by Nord-T. Nord-T is a two-person enterprise run by two friends in an attempt to revolutionize tea culture around the world. Founded in Helsinki, Nord-T offers unique blends of Nordic flavors. We tested Bear Hug, a delicious combination of green tea, lingonberry, birch leaf, and heather. A sip of the slightly sour tea will transport you right into the peaceful forests of Finland.
Next, Nokko, a nettle powder by Arctic Warriors. Arctic Warriors was born in the deep wilderness of Finnish Lapland. Lapland is home to some of the most nutritious plants in the world, real superfoods! We were happy to try their nettle powder, which is certainly something you don’t get to see every day. Nettle is rich in vitamin C, iron, and calcium and will give you a real boost to your immune system. Add it to your smoothies, salads, or perhaps to your porridge, like us!
Something no Finn can live without is licorice. Finnflavours carries a very special kind, Laku spelt licorice by SunSpelt. Admittedly, I have never been a great fan of licorice, but it is the ideal snack if you’re looking for a less-sweet energy kick! PS: It makes the perfect travel companion 😉
Finally, our favorite: Wild Blueberry by Goodio. In my book, you can never go wrong with chocolate. Especially when it’s raw, organic, and vegan! Oh, and delicious! Goodio chocolates are hand-made in Helsinki and Finnflavours currently carries three of their creations. However, if it was up to me, I could only eat their Wild Blueberry for the rest of my life. You just have to adore the combination of sweet creamy chocolate and tangy wild blueberry. Yum!
